Level 2 EV chargers (32-48A) are classified as continuous loads, requiring a circuit rated at 125% of the charger's maximum draw.
| Recommended wire | 6/2 with ground or 6 AWG THHN in conduit |
| Breaker | 50A double-pole |
| Voltage | 240V |
| Typical amperage | 40A |
| Circuit amperage | 50A |
| NEC reference | NEC 625 |
| Max recommended distance | 50 feet (without voltage drop concerns) |
A 40A charger needs a 50A circuit (40 × 1.25 = 50). A 48A charger (the maximum for a 60A circuit) needs 6 AWG wire on a 60A breaker. For future-proofing, many electricians recommend installing a 60A circuit even for a 40A charger.
